The Fylde Coast Collection at Vectis
The Valentino Rossi Collection
To be sold on Wednesday 14th November.
Valentine Rossi is acknowledged by fans, the media and even his rivals as the greatest living motor cycle racer, in fact this has led to him being given the moniker of GOAT, ‘Greatest of all Time’.
Born in Urbino in Italy in 1979, Valentino grew up racing karts, spending time with his father going to race tracks and helping build and repair the racing vehicles in the garage. He had a natural flare for control at speed and self confidence in his ability which led to him winning the Regional Karting Championship and gaining fifth place in the National Finals in the same year aged only 11. Like his father who had been a motorcycle racer, Valentino wanted to progress to something a little faster and began in the 125CC series bike races. This was the beginning of a long and illustrious career which spans to this day. He has experienced his share of ups and downs but is the only rider in the history of world championships to have won in 4 different classes – 125cc (1), 250cc (1), 500cc (1) and Moto GP (6) and holds 9 world titles.
He is also sometimes referred to as ‘The Doctor’, although why this name is used is a little vague, possibly as he has been granted an honorary degree in Communications and Advertising or the fact that in Italian ‘Doctor’ refers to someone of high standing and importance.
Such are his achievements, he was an obvious choice when German model company Minichamps wanted to release a bike related model range which was launched in the early 1990’s.
In the Vectis Auction Sale on Wednesday 14th November 2018 there are over 80 pieces from this collection under the banner ‘The Fylde Coast Collection’. They are all in 1/12th scale and the collection incorporates figures, bikes, helmets and diorama’s, in single lots and others in small groups.
One of the most desirable lots is no. 6335, the double set "Valentino Rossi" and "Jorge Lorenzo" from the memorable Moto GP Barcelona 2009, when Rossi narrowly beat the Spanish World Champion rider Lorenzo in a close run dual. With many lead changes and much excitement, the race was not decided until the last lap. This Limited-Edition Set comprises the two Yamaha motorcycle riders in an epic dual at the Catalunya Race Track, and also contains the race DVD. This is in mint condition in a near mint hinged presentation box. It carries a pre- sale estimate of £100 - £120.
Another interesting piece is Lot no. 6336 the Motorcycle and Figure showing Rossi hugging his bike. Entitled the ‘The Years with Yamaha "Valentino Rossi" Yamaha YZR-M1’ Moto GP 2010 Valencia, this piece is mint in a near mint hinged presentation box with an estimate of £70 - £90.
One of the most unusual lots in the sale is no. 6334, a portable toilet. Not just any convenience, this mobile lavatory accompanied by Valentino Rossi from the Moto GP Jerez 2009, is obviously unused and is in mint condition within a near mint box. It carries a figure of £50 - £70.
These pieces are now highly sought after by collectors of both racing memorabilia and model collectors with some 1:12 scale racing motorcycles often commanding prices in excess of £300.
