Corgi Toys is a popular brand of diecast model vehicles, initially produced by the Mettoy Company of Northampton which first started to produce colourful, pressed metal toys in the 1930s. The Corgi Toys line was known for its high level of detail and accuracy, and it gained a strong following among collectors. Although production of Mettoy Corgi Toys ceased in the late 1980s, Corgi models are still produced under the manufacturer Hornby Hobbies. Vintage Corgi models remain highly sought after by enthusiasts today
The first Corgi models appeared in 1956, these models replicated British cars including the Ford Consul, Austin A50 Cambridge, Morris Cowley, Vauxhall Velox, Rover 90, Riley Pathfinder and Hillman Husky. Corgis were sold as the ones with windows. Other later innovations included Glidamatic spring suspension, opening car bonnets and boots and diamond jewelled headlights. In the 1960s Corgi produced the bestselling diecast toy car of all time, the famous Aston Martin DB5 from the James Bond film 'Goldfinger'. Another top-selling model of all time, reaching five million units, is the 1966 Batmobile.
Corgi introduced the ‘Whizzwheels’ range in 1970 to compete with Mattel’s Hot Wheels series, this range featured frictionless wheels to increase playability.
