Soldier Bears

There was a very special teddy bear in the Vectis Doll and Bear Sale on Tuesday 30th January, small in size but with a huge history. It is a ‘soldier bear’, a term given to miniature teddies which brought comfort to so many.

The rise in demand for these bears was at its highest during the First World War when soldiers were separated from loved ones for long periods. Keepsakes such as brooches, silks (embroidered postcards), tiny bears and animals became popular to be presented as Love Tokens by sweethearts or family members to those away fighting, to remind them of home and protect them in the belief they would return safely. The diminutive teds were produced in large numbers in a variety of colours, the most common being gold but also in patriotic red, white and blue, rare purple and green.

Soldier bears are often all attributed to the premier British teddy bear manufacturer Farnell but other early companies such as Steevans Manufacturing, Peacock, Harwin and Teddy Toy all released military or patriotic bears, so is it feasible that they also produced mascot teds.

The versions of the mascot bears most commonly attributed to Farnell are quite distinctive. Fashioned in mohair, the majority measuring between 3 – 3.5” in height, no distinguishable paw or foot pads, having jointed limbs and neck, the head is rather round in shape without a gusset piece, most have clear or painted back glass eyes, occasionally small black bead eyes, ears are inset chenille pipe cleaners in the same colour as the mohair. These remarkable bears remind us of the sacrifice of many and create a wonderful talking point of a bear collection. They are extremely sought after and as such prices remain high. Regardless of condition, expect to pay a minimum of £100 to £600 for a single ted, with coloured versions being the most desirable. Vectis previously sold a Set of Three Campbell (Soldier) Bears accompanied by their leather travel trunk and information for £1,100 (plus commission).

There was a rare red Farnell version in the  Doll and Teddy Bear Sale at Vectis Auctions on Thursday 30th January 2018. Lot number 5478 with an estimate of £180 - £220. The bear achieved a fantastic £648!
