The Michael D. Foster Reference Collection & Tinplate Toys sale which was held on the 21st of March featured some extraordinary items. The Michael D. Foster Reference Collection part 2 featured examples from volumes, three, four and five of the anthology including Brimtoy, Wells, and Mettoy, engines, coaches, wagons, accessories and sets plus clockwork vehicles. The Harrogate Tinplate Collection featured over 100 lots from a private owner collection including pressed steel and tinplate lorries, aircraft, cars, figures and animals from British and German manufacturers. Motoring reference books; sweet, confectionary, biscuit and tobacco tins; board games, vintage cameras, watches, clocks and coins; plus, phonographs and cylinders, and a radiogram. The sale also included Lego and Playmobil shop display figures, sign and displays, Lego vehicles; friction drive, pre and post war vehicles, novelty toys, radio-controlled boats and aircraft, Jetex Models, Meccano Outfits and much more.

 

Brimtoy No 56 Two Arched Viaduct x3. Tinplate viaducts brightly printed in red, yellow and black with embossed arches and balustrades. Length of each section is 9”/23cm. Supports have been fitted with strengthening and stabilising removable wooden inserts. Circa 1930’s. Generally Good Plus. (3) (3/134)

Wells Brimtoy Mickey Mouse Circus Train Set. Tinplate clockwork 0-4-0 Silver Link loco in silver and black with red detailing. 2509 to cab sides. Red tender with Mickey Mouse Stoker figure. 4 wheel Circus Dining Car colourfully tin printed with Disney characters. 4 wheel Mickey Mouse Circus animal car with printed Mickey and Minnie and other figures. Circa 1930’s. Mechanism working when tested. Condition is Good Plus to Excellent. Together with track and remains of original box, mainly the top of lid. Poor. (3/163)

Mettoy Passenger Train Set No 5362. Tinplate clockwork O gauge 0-4-0 Battle of Britain class loco, Hurricane, and tender in blue and black with red and silver detail. Hurricane to boiler sides, 34065 to cab sides and BR crest to tender. Circa 1950. With key. Working when tested. With 3x blue and yellow 4 wheel coaches and a circle of track. Contents are Good Plus to Excellent. Box with attractive illustrated lid has some reinforcing to base and repairs to lid but is generally Good. (5/103)

Meccano Constructor Car No.1 - scarce example is powder blue with cream roof and cycle type wings, red interior seating, flat spots to the rubber tyres particularly at the rear and as a result we are unable to test the clockwork motor but it appears complete - could be enhanced by further cleaning - otherwise Fair to Good.

Lines Bros (Triang UK) scarce 1937 pressed steel Delivery Van - pre-war example with open sided cab, 4 hole disc wheels with thin rubber tyres, includes opening tailgate to rear and radiator grille - some wear due to storage but otherwise and Fair scarce example, 17"/44cm long.

Mettoy, Wells or similar large scale British made tinplate clockwork Cars - from the pre and post-war period to include (1) 13"/33cm Racer with balloon spoked wheels, racing number 3; (2) MS 3510 - Racing Car made for the Marks & Spencers Stores pre-war and (3) small scale red Opentop Car - all would benefit from restoration due to storage but all have their driver figures - Fair. Fry's and Rowntree's tinplate point of sale dummy chocolate bar displays - to include Fry's Milk Chocolate Hazel Bars showing 10 dummy bars and a Rowntree's York Milk showing 6 dummy bars - both include their storage box with hinged lid and period advertising - c.1950's - Good. (2)

CKO and other mostly Japanese tinplate toys - to include a pre-war Cyclist on a Tricycle (lacks handlebars and motor), together with a working clockwork Grasshopper with hopping action. Also included are a miniature tinplate Armoured Car and a similar Saloon Car - otherwise Fair to Good. (4)

"Shell Motor Spirit" tinplate miniature Petrol Can with screw top and handle, suitable as a pedal car accessory, 5"/13cm high.

Edison (USA) "Gem" Phonograph - dating from the late 19th Century, black cast metal case with matching black tinplate horn, mounted on a wooden base with matching wooden cover and handle, the operation is untested but the clockwork motor is in working order driving the cylinder, the reproducer is marked "Model C", the base is 10"/25cm wide - Good for display and comes with a pair of cylinder records "My Old Kentucky Home" and "Laughing Eyes" which are Fair including boxes.

Tipp & Co (Germany) tinplate clockwork Motorcycle - dark blue, with tinprinted detail including colourful rider, registration number T686, the clockwork is present but has a broken spring - otherwise Good for display, c.1933, 8"/20cm long.
