Full Lot Description
Merrythought Woppit/Mr Whoppit original teddy bear, British, 1956, stock number 1979, light brown mohair, amber and black glass eyes, black vertically stitched nose, blue felt inner ears and feet, wearing red felt cardigan, Good, with a hole on the top of one of his feet; blue felt is faded; cardigan is missing a button and the stitching is slightly frayed, Merrythought tag on the bottom of his foot is also frayed, 9"/22.9cm in height. NB: Referencing the V&A Museum, which has one of these bears in its collection: "The original Woppit was a bear-like character that featured in the children’s comic Robin in the 1950s. In 1956, the British soft toy manufacturer, Merrythought, produced three Robin characters as toys, including Woppit. This character became famous because one was given to Sir Donald Campbell, the land and water speed record holder, who used it as his mascot. He called it Mr Whoppit and it famously survived his fatal crash on Coniston Water, Cumbria, in 1967."
