The Beatles Love Me Do withdrawn 50th Anniversary 7" vinyl disc (featuring Andy White on drums), 2012, Side A Love Me Do, Side B P.S. I Love You. Side A matrix detail: BC 88258 - 01 A1 and Side B matrix detail: BC 88258 - 01 B1. This disc was released as a limited edition to mark the 50th anniversary of the original release on 5 October 1962. It is a replica of the original single that was presented in the original colourful "beach towel" Parlophone company sleeve. The audio itself is taken from the mono remaster of 2009. There are two versions of the original (1962) 'Love Me Do' single: Version one features Ringo on drums - that was recorded on 4th September 1962 and was used on the early releases of the single, and Version two features Andy White on drums (with Ringo on tambourine), which was recorded on 11th September 1962. To commemorate the fifty year date of that original 'Love Me Do' single being released, a fiftieth anniversary single was intended to be released by EMI. Version One. The 1st October 2012 release: On week commencing 1st October 2012, the first batch of this replica single was sent out to record dealers who had placed their orders. They were delivered in time for the official release, planned for 5th October 2012. This version of the single was immediately recalled by EMI as it was discovered they had mistakenly used the version of Love Me Do that features Andy White on drums. Also, they had wrongly used the catalogue number of 45 - R 4714 on the B Side (R 4714 belongs to a 1960 Matt Monroe release 'Portrait of my Love'). EMI announced that it was under strict instruction from The Beatles' Apple label to recall and destroy all copies of that single. Some record dealers who had already received their stock of the single are known to have distributed mail orders before the recall - so there are copies in circulation (although it is not known how many). The withdrawn release has BC 88258-01 A1 etched in the run-out groove of the A Side and BC 88258-01 B1 etched in the run-out groove of the B Side. Version Two. 22nd October 2012 release: EMI reissued the single on 22nd October. That version now included the (correct) original version of 'Love Me' Do featuring Ringo on drums - although the B Side still carries the wrong catalogue number of 45 - R 4714! That correct release has the matrix detail of BC 91232-01 A1 etched in the run-out groove of the A Side, with matrix detail BC 88258-01 B1 etched in the run-out groove of the B Side (as the 5th October release). PLEASE NOTE: The item listed here is the extremely rare ORIGINAL (withdrawn) FIRST VERSION of the 50th anniversary 'Love Me Do' disc (that has the incorrect (Andy White) version - matrix number on the A side - BC 8852 - 01 A1). Excellent, unplayed / untested.
