Tinplate & Specialist Sale - Wednesday 14th November 2018 HIGHLIGHTS
The Tinplate and Specialist sale held on the 14th of November started with The London Decorative Tin Collection, 33 lots of unusual and scarce decorative biscuit and sweet tins; followed by further tinplate and plastic lots, including battery operated, clockwork and friction drive cars, ships and aircraft, plus games and novelty toys as well as a large pressed steel pedal Ferrari 156 car. The Porto Collection featured boxed cars from Minichamps, Neo and Spark, plus Conrad Trucks, and Brooklin models, Lansdowne, Rob Eddie and other boxed cars. The Fylde Coast Collections included Minichamps motorcycles and figures, plus Valentino Rossi figures, helmets and memorabilia, plus Corgi Classics and Chipperfield Circus. The sale also included a Lego Railway Collection, Matchbox Regular wheels, Super Fast, Matchbox Models of Yesteryear, Major Packs, King Size and Super Kings plus racing cars, trucks, buses and more.
McVitie and Price tinplate "Bluebird" Biscuit Tin issued in 1911 and also used by the Co-operative Wholesale Society in 1912 and others. Colourfully tinprinted, the removable head acts as a lid. The reference to Bluebird in its name refers to a species of Albatross and was styled after the grotesque earthenware bird produced by Martin Brothers of Southall - some age related wear but overall Good for display standing 9"/23cm tall.
Serpell Biscuit Manufactures "Reading UK" an early tinplate 4-wheeled Horsedrawn Ambulance shaped Biscuit Container - scarce early example c.1920 - grey/cream, with colourful Soldier images, hinged lid, some age related wear otherwise Fair to Good, 16cm/6" long.
Large pressed steel Pedal Car model of a Ferrari 156 - scarce example produced around 1961 under license by a French Company Morellet Guerineau. This pedal car was originally marketed as the Ferrari Spa. The car has a red pressed steel body with original twin white speed stripes to the front bonnet and rear engine area, with racing number 5 to either side of the bonnet and "Ferrari" printed onto the front above the shark nose radiator grille. Fitted with a white interior seat, together with steerable front wheels, fitted with a replacement wire steering wheel but does still have its pedals, running gear and cranks in working order and driving the rear wheels. Missing its knock off hub caps but retains its rubber tyres - still otherwise a Fair to Good model of this classic racing car, 44"/112cm long.
Mobo (UK) "Mobo Canoe" - scarce 1950's British made pressed steel novelty boat with 2 x clown figures, oars and instructions, 16"/40cm long - Good Plus, still retains a colourfully illustrated card box with instruction slip.
Exoto 1/18th scale 97106 Ferrari 641/2 - 1990 50th Anniversary model - black base with polished aluminium body and racing number 1 - generally Excellent Plus some dust in places but should clean up to improve in Good box.
Lego Railway 9v/12v System "Santa Fe" a group of 5 x Passenger Cars including Dining Cars, Compartments and Mail Car or similar also comes with part used decal sheet - Good Plus to Excellent Plus some light dust in places and a few loose parts, not checked for completeness.
Matchbox Regular Wheels 30b Magirus-Deutz Crane Truck - Stannard Code 1 - tan body with silver trim, red jib & double arm hook, gloss black base, 20-tread grey plastic wheels - Good with some play wear and hook a little bent out of shape in Good "New Model" type C Lesney box (one inner end flap almost detached).
Matchbox Superfast 12a Land Rover Safari - blue body with burnt sienna luggage, white interior without transmission tunnel cast, 5-spoke narrow wheels with black ale clips - Fair to Good playworn in generally Good type F3 transitional box (one striker side stained & discoloured) - rare model to find in any condition.
Matchbox Models of Yesteryear Y13 Crossley RAF Tender - RAF blue body & chassis, type A rear drop side body with 5 x cast cleats, type A cast open front springs without strengthening web with full Lesney Products & Co Limited lettering, type A baseplate with "LD" text, dull dark red/maroon seats, tan canopies & grille, chrome 24-spoke wheels - Mint apart from a couple of minor factory assembly marks in Good to Good Plus woodgrain window box. Very rare First issue.
Boxed pair of models (1) Corgi 224 Bentley Continental Sports Saloon - two-tone black/silver, red interior, chrome trim, spun hubs with grey treaded tyres, complete with spare wheel in boot - Near Mint in Fair but complete box (small tear on inner flap); (2) Dinky 319 Weeks Tipping Farm trailer - blue with yellow chassis - Near Mint in Fair box.
